چکیده

* Corresponding author. Abstract – Current satellite active fire products provide a snapshot of biomass burning activity at regional to global scales. In order to assess the performance of those products, it is important to: (i) have near-coincident reference data to avoid validation artefacts due to short-term variations in fire conditions; and (ii) to be able to represent the entire active fire line and adjacent smouldering areas, as well as the surrounding fire-free background that will normally be used by contextual fire algorithms in the classification of a fire pixel. In this study, we present the results from the global scale assessment of the EOS/Terra MODIS 1km active fire product (MOD14) based on the use of near-coincident 30m Landsat-class reference data. The validation methodology is also demonstrated for other fire products, with a focus on the next generation NPP/VIIRS and GOES-R/ABI preand post-launch active fire validation plans using Landsat-class and airborne reference data.

Fusion of LST products of ASTER and MODIS Sensors Using STDFA Model

Land Surface Temperature (LST) is one of the most important physical and climatological  crucial yet variable parameter in environmental phenomena studies such as, soil moisture conditions, urban heat island, vegetation health, fire risk for forest areas and heats effects on human’s health. These studies need to land surface temperature with high spatial and temporal resolution. Remote sensing ...

Strategies for the fusion of satellite fire radiative power with burned area data for fire radiative energy derivation

[1] Instantaneous estimates of the power released by a fire (Fire Radiative Power, FRP) are available with satellite active fire detection products. Integrating FRP in time provides an estimate of the total energy released (Fire Radiative Energy, FRE), which can be converted into burned biomass estimates needed by the atmospheric emissions modeling community. While straightforward in theory, th...

Validation of the MODIS active fire product over Southern Africa with ASTER data

This paper describes the use of high-spatial-resolution ASTER data to determine the accuracy of the moderate-resolution MODIS active fire product. Our main objective was to develop a methodology to use ASTER data for quantitative evaluation of the MODIS active fire product and to apply it to fires in southern Africa during the 2001 burning season. We utilize 18 ASTER scenes distributed througho...

Lessons to be learned from the comparison of three satellite-derived biomass burning products

[1] Thematic maps of active fires or burned areas derived from low resolution remotely sensed data are widely used as an input for the estimation of the atmospheric emissions due to biomass burning. The present work considers three of the global products available for year 2000: two burned area datasets (GBA2000 and GlobScar) and one active fires dataset (World Fire Atlas) and analyses the rela...
